We might have thought that a relatively low production would have enabled the grapes to reach better ripeness levels; however, the fine weather arrived too late for the Merlot, whose ripeness was too far behind to catch up. The quality of the Merlot was, on the whole, disappointing. On the other hand, the Cabernets and the Petit Verdot took full advantage of this Indian summer, which so often produces very good, even great vintages in Bordeaux. Their quality was, on the whole, remarkable. Our final blend, therefore, includes very little Merlot (it may even be the lowest ever proportion in history at Château Margaux). So it is essentially a wine made up of fine, pure, rich, tight-knit and tender Cabernet Sauvignon. It may lack some complexity and depth in order to be considered a great vintage. Very fine September weather can certainly make up most of the lost ground, but it cannot totally replace the ripeness that is achieved during a glorious August. After the bottling, Château Margaux 2002 had acquired even more finesse, without losing any of that classic tight-knit tannic structure which bodes so well for excellent aging. We recommend, ideally, waiting for a few more years even if it already gives a lot of pleasure. Nonetheless, it has a rightful place in the estate's lineage of great vintages: it is profound, complex, intense and long. In some respects, it even surpasses our hopes following September's rainfall and demonstrates yet again to what extent great terroirs are capable of transmitting all their best qualities into the wine.

The initial tastings in the winemaking process offered a moment of astonishment. The Merlot batches are remarkable: the aromas are fruity and soft, a roundness on the palate and rich volume made it possible to include them in a proportion of 8% for the first wine. The Cabernet Sauvignon is always the heart and the framework for Chateau Margaux, accounting for 89% of the blend. Upon tasting, the tannins were perfectly ripe, which reassured us that our decision to wait a few more days before harvesting was the right choice. The wines? structure remains a rare combination of power and refinement. Cabernet Franc (2%) and Petit Verdot (1%) round out the blend for this wine. Chateau Margaux represents 37% of the harvest. Winter temperatures weren?t particularly cold. The vines budded around April 4th, but we weren?t wary enough of the spring-like temperatures and a frost on the nights of April 27th and 28th served as a reminder that, above all, winegrowers are dependent on nature. The choice location of our vineyard plots allowed us to limit frost damage: only 10% of our red vines were affected.

In the whole growth cycle, only the last week of June saw heavy rainfall. The vines had already flowered between May 25th and 30th in the most favorable conditions for efficient, homogeneous pollination. Summer 2017 more or less resembled summer 2016: warm and very dry through July and August. Light rainfall in early September was the only thing that disrupted a rare opportunity to produce a third great vintage after 2015 and 2016; we had just harvested our white grapes when heavy precipitation dashed our hopes of a truly standout year.

We then had to make a crucial decision: to harvest quickly grapes that were not yet ripe enough for fear that Botrytis would ruin them, or wait for the sun?s return and harvest riper, more concentrated grapes later in September. In keeping with our high standards of quality and reassured by optimistic weather forecasts, we chose the latter and harvested the reds between September 12th and October 3rd in exceptionally fine weather conditions.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0564/7728/6464/products/Chateau-Margaux-red-wine_6e587e05-ca29-4c23-8464-38390e5808c7.jpg?v=1706151553
pavillon-rouge-du-chateau-margaux-2000-750ml
Pavillon Rouge Du Chateau Margaux 2000 750ml

The 2000 Pavillon Rouge is mature and elegant, showing cedar, spice, black cherries, and currants with a complex, savory nose. The fabulous potential of this vintage led us paradoxically to make a strict selection at the blending so that Château Margaux 2000 would have the most perfect expression possible. Naturally, this very rigorous selection was also of direct benefit to Pavillon Rouge, which was made richer by very good wines which did not go into the Château Margaux. At the same time, it was not blended with the lesser wines which were reserved for the third wine. The 2000 Pavillon Rouge has the complexity and density of a first wine, and it certainly has the ageing potential. It has probably not reached its peak, although it is difficult to resist today. It shouldn't be overlooked though, that this success has also been the result of more and more rigorous selection: in 2006, barely 36% of the crop went into the first wine, which will only be a third by the time it is bottled, after the unavoidable loss of the lees wine at each racking. One single batch of Merlot, though of remarkably high quality, finally went into the blend, but it only represents 4% of the whole… It is the first time we have had so little. The Petit Verdot (4%) and the Cabernet Franc (2%) make up their usual proportions; they each bring added complexity that is difficult to define, but is most certainly a necessary contribution to the character of the wines of Château Margaux. The Cabernet Sauvignon therefore takes up almost all of the place: 90%! It brings to the 2006 an extraordinary aromatic finesse, a tannic richness that is second only to the 2005; and a particularly dense and tight-knit texture. The finish is very long, fresh and lively, a little bit firm, but already packed with flavor. 2006 is therefore a great Château Margaux vintage. Of course, it is not 2005, or 2000; those vintages are exceptional. But it does have both the grace and the purity of the 1996, the so classic freshness of the 2004 and the heady power of the 1986 or the 1995. Such balance is a brilliant expression of Château Margaux's noble terroir, but demands a little patience. We recommend waiting for several more years. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, crisp acidity, a life-affirming sense of balance with well-integrated new oak towards the finish. I concur with Robert Parker that his has become more structured and masculine in bottle, yet there is pedigree here from start to finish, a sense of effortlessness that is seductive. On the palate, the wine has incredible volume, smoothness and length. Of course, it is our large plots of Cabernet Sauvignon that give this wine all its elegance. They make up 94% of the blend. The Merlots and the Cabernet Francs, with respectively 2% and 3%, bring a great complexity to the wine both with aroma, and with the smoothness of their tannic structure. Finally, the Petit Verdots, despite their small quantity (only 1% of the blend), bring considerable density and volume. In spite of this vintage's dry and sunny summer conditions, this wine has kept all its acid potential, the beginnings of perfect evolution and preservation. Château Margaux 2016 is an exceptional wine, the result of the combination of amazing weather conditions, the knowledge of our terroir and a great selection effort (28% of the harvest). (October 2018)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0564/7728/6464/files/Chateau-Margaux-red-wine_b942ceae-2062-4416-957a-eb74c4377670.jpg?v=1707203477
chateau-margaux-2021-750ml
Chateau Margaux 2021 750ml

The Château Margaux 2021 captures the essence of the estate’s timeless elegance in a vintage defined by precision and purity. The estate picked late, bled the wine more to keep the structure and the result is mouthfilling and succulent, with Margaux charm.
Closure: Cork
Alcohol: 13.10%
Body: Medium
Grapes: 87% Cabernet Sauvignon 8% Merlot 3% Petit Verdot

The Wine Advocate | RP 95+
Published: Feb 8, 2024
Drink: 2030-2055

The 2021 Château Margaux saw a traditional élevage in new barrels, with bottling in July, and as readers will remember, it's a blend of 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot that benefited from late picking, appreciable percentages of saignée, and a strict selection. Meticulously maintained vineyards, situated on the appellation's finest terroirs, are farmed intelligently, without deleafing or green harvesting—something other producers increasingly emulate as they pull back from the excesses of the early 2000s. Cabernet Sauvignon is on the increase, both in terms of plantings and as a percentage of the blend (it represents 90% of the grand vin in 2019), which works perfectly with Margaux's soils and the estate's elegant but concentrated style. Winemaking is very traditional, with classical macerations and an 18-month élevage in new oak (most barrels are produced in-house) punctuated by six rackings and one egg-white fining. An in-house bottling line is being acquired to bring even greater control and flexibility. Natural cork is the order of the day for the reds, of course, but whites now see Diam 30 to ensure consistent evolution, and all are bottled in Margaux's new proprietary extra-dark glass bottle.

Jancis Robinson | JR 17
Published: Jan 25, 2024
Drink: 2027-2040

Tasted blind. Still, in 2009, Mother Nature surpassed herself. She allowed the greatest terroirs, whatever their grape variety, to bring their fruit to exceptional ripeness, providing a wine of wonderful concentration, finesse, balance and freshness. The Cabernet (87% of the blend) has no equivalent other than 2005, but it is more tender. The only two batches of Merlot that were kept (9%) have no equivalent at all. As for the Cabernet Franc (2%) and the Petit Verdot (2%), they performed at their highest levels. The 2009 Château Margaux is an unparalleled vintage in its tannic power and fullness (reminding us of 2005) and its softness (reminiscent of 1990). And since its alcoholic degree is barely over 13, its finish remains fresh, flavorsome and of astonishing length. When to drink it? This is a question that is difficult to answer as it already gives so much pleasure, but with such enormous potential. Rain was sparse but frequent during the growing season. There were just two weeks of sustained rain in June (72 mm). However, these conditions made it potentially difficult to keep the vines healthy. Our vineyard teams succeeded in main¬taining healthy foliage to ensure good-quality ripening of the grapes and a successful harvest.
The vines flowered between the 31st of May and the 5th of June in good conditions, with no signs of coulure or millerandage.
2023 was markedly different from the previous vintage in terms of temperature.
