It features characteristics similar to those of the \"Grand Vin\", but with lesser potential for ageing as its ageing in barrels is much shorter. It must be drunk younger than its more robust counterpart.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe vintage\u003cbr\u003e2011 was characterized by a very dry winter and start to the spring. Barely 150 mm of rain during the first five months of the year: a record! High temperatures in April, May and June caused the vines to grow very quickly, resulting in the first flowers appearing exceptionally early, in early May!\u003cbr\u003eA cooler July gave the vines a chance to rest a little before an exceptionally hot August (with an average temperature of 31°C for the month). The grapes were harvested two weeks earlier than usual, and were of excellent quality with superb tannins.\u003cbr\u003eThe Merlot was rich and dense, but the low rainfall during the summer seriously reduced yields. A warm April was followed by a cool, wet May with occasional spikes of heat. Flowering at the beginning of June was very satisfactory and promised an early, high quality vintage. Alternating periods of rain and warmth then slowed growth and much of the advance was lost; July was cold and wet, August was cloudy and fairly cool. From the end of August, the region experienced an \"Indian summer\" with hot, dry weather until the end of October. It was the warmest September recorded for nearly a century...\u003cbr\u003eAs a result, the grapes were able to ripen gradually during September and October in the unusually mild conditions and the harvest was of excellent quality.\u003cbr\u003eWe postponed the start of harvests several times on account of the lingering, consistently fine weather... The Merlot was picked between 22 September and 4 October and the Cabernet Franc on 3 and 7 October.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLocation\u003cbr\u003ePomerol The Pomerol appellation stretches on a plateau on the right bank of the Dordogne river, about 40km north east of Bordeaux. In Pomerol, merlot is king. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly grainy texture, lovely black fruit here laced with Earl Grey, spice and sage, quite intense and fanning out gloriously towards the long finish. This seems to have gained precision after bottling and I did warn that it may merit a higher score. This is a deeply impressive L'Evangile that might challenge Lafite-Rothschild in the long term. Not the most layered, but what is there is really quite enjoyable. Will be great with food and will still last longer. If anything it does feel a little ripe and over-extracted, but seems to settling down nicely with soft spice and wet stones on the finish. Firstly, the pelosols, characterised by swelling clays at the top of the plateau. Then soils with a gravel-clay to gravel-sand texture.
