The yields came in at 51 hectoliters per hectare and it is matured in 75% new oak and 25% one-year-old barrels, the final alcohol level 13.3%. It has a beautifully defined, very detailed bouquet with mineral-rich black fruit laced with cedar and graphite notes, living up to its nom de plume as the "Pauillac of Margaux." The palate is simply the best that I have ever tasted at the estate, without question. This has presence, but also weightlessness, filigree tannin and perfectly pitched acidity, with real intensity and drive. The tension here is outstanding and the persistence is incredibly long. It is not the showiest of all the 2016s by a long stretch, and yet it is everything you could possibly want from a Margaux. Like Beychevelle this year, the 2016 Brane-Cantenac puts recent vintages in the shade, thanks not only to the growing season, but also a new punching down system in their gravity-fed winery that was completed in 2015. In addition to all our efforts, there were two key factors in obtaining high-quality wines. The first was the plateau of Brane’s soil water reserves, thanks to which the vines did not suffer from the spring drought. The second was the use of optical sorting. Sun scald, uneven ripening within bunches and between the stocks and the poor health status of certain grapes made careful grape selection especially important. It is clear that without this tool, the wines produced would not have achieved the same quality level.

<span style="font-size: The nose is quite striking with a tang of eucalyptus, a trait that Henri Lurton himself picked up when we tasted together. The palate is medium-bodied with a peppermint-tinged entry, the tannins quite thick and perhaps lacking the precision that Henri imparts into his Margaux wine nowadays. There is something not quite true to the style of Brane-Cantenac here, mimicking something it is not, trying to be a different person. It is an enjoyable wine but I would broach this in its youth. Thunderstorms and hail in May were challenging, and led to serious mildew threats. These were dealt with quickly and carefully, using sustainable treatment techniques. Flowering began rather late, in June, and coulure became an issue. The grape colour change occurred in early August and took some time. Early September was equally difficult, with irregular conditions slowing ripening.
However, the weather changed drastically from September 15 and remained fair until the end of the harvest. Very thorough sorting ensured we completely eliminated vegetation debris and unripe grapes. The wines show great potential, firmness and finesse.

Technical Specs

Alcohol: 13.0%
Closure: Natural Cork
Harvest: 20 September–17 October 2008
Oak: 18 months in French oak, 70% new
Varietals: 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 28% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc
Skin Contact: Traditional fermentation and extended maceration with gentle extraction
Winemaker: Henri Lurton
Region: Margaux, Bordeaux

Serving Temperature: 16–18°C
Decanting: 1½–2 hours
Food Pairing: Roast lamb, beef, duck, venison, game birds, mushrooms, truffle dishes and mature cheeses

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0564/7728/6464/files/chateau-brane-cantenac-margaux-750ml.jpg?v=1755607286
chateau-brane-cantenac-margaux-2012-750ml
Chateau Brane Cantenac Margaux 2012 750ml

The 2012 Château Brane-Cantenac is a refined Margaux with a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon and 32% Merlot. Getting the harvesting date right was crucial in order to obtain fully ripe grapes, without endangering their health by allowing the rain at the end of September and in October to take its toll. Brane’s great success in this vintage is down to the terroir, which leads grapes to ripen early. It is exactly what you expect from this Margaux estate. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, well-judged acidity, graphite and cedar towards the linear finish that will clearly need several years to unfold. Classic Margaux really, but wise owls will cellar it away for several years.

James Suckling | JS 92
Published: Feb 13, 2017

A little bit lighter than some of the 2014 Margauxs, but this is quite an elegant wine with a long, dry finish of some sophistication.
