The 2022 Bin 128 Shiraz from Coonawarra is elegant and medium-bodied, showing dark blackberry, cassis, and black plum layered with notes of leather, tobacco, and subtle spice. The 2022 Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz has an old-reading-room character to the bouquet: soft leather and old books, cassis, tobacco, fireplace and dark chocolate. In the mouth, the wine is chewy and supple, succulent and truly lovely. There's plenty of tannin here, but they feel easily digested and nicely integrated. The wine matured for 12 months in French hogsheads (30% new).

With dark blackberry notes adding a sharp tart edge to the red-hearted earthiness of powerfully concentrated redcurrant and black plum, this wine has incredible drive that rolls like thunder through the mid-palate. An especially strong vintage in Coonawarra, after a long, even harvesting period, has provided beautifully balanced fruit with a lengthy, cohesive flavour profile, bound by stern tannins to ensure good cellaring.

Some frost but no loss thanks to their frost fans. All French oak whereas Bin 28 is 100% American.12 months in French oak hogsheads (30% new).
Blackish purple. Smells like marmalade on charcoal! Very nice and well integrated. Long and saline. Firm finish with a sucky-stone impression but the fruit weight compensates.

With each vintage release the cool-climate Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz provides an interesting counterpoint to the more opulent and richly concentrated warm climate Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz. Bin 128 comprises fruit sourced from the unique terra rossa soils of Coonawarra, a region that exemplifies the perfume, transparency and seductive nature of cool-climate red table wines. Coonawarra has remained the source of shiraz fruit for Bin 128 since the inaugural release of the 1962 vintage. In order to further enhance the regional qualities of Bin 128, the wine is matured in a mixture of new and seasoned French oak hogsheads, levage that was refined during the 1980's when the transition was made from American to French oak.
FLAVOURS AND PALATE
Medium-bodied? well-proportioned, yet not big. Layered.
Appetising, juicy ... laced with cracked black pepper, red spices (Hungarian paprika) and caraway.
A skerrick of (cherrywood) oak and brick-dust tannins verging on chalky
Fruits evident, yet the savouries beckon greater attention (glazed meats, green olive, capers).
Yet another manifestation of the flavours and structure of cooler-climate French oak-matured shiraz ... channelled viaa Penfolds winemaking lens.
