He named the place in honour of his wife, whose maiden name was Blewitt. The boundaries of Blewitt Springs sub region are defined by the underlying geology, the majority of which is 34 to 56 million year-old North Maslin and South Maslin Sand. The geological description is cross-bedded medium and coarse grained sand.

Within the wider McLaren Vale region, Blewitt Springs is located in the north eastern corner with altitudes in some vineyards of 200m above sea level. It is therefore one of the coolest of the sub regions and receives adequate rainfall. The cool temperatures and free draining sands produce wines with elegance and floral characteristics. This sub region was popular with early settlers to the region and contains many of McLaren Vale?s old bush vine vineyards. It is also typically the last area to be picked, sometimes up to a month after the Beautiful View region. The Ironstone Pressings GSM receives many parcels from this sub region providing elegance and fragrance.

The Vintage
Sufficient winter rains set up the vines well with good canopies. December and most of January were very cool with only three days above 30 C until late in the month. There was a string of days above 40?C in late January, Grenache vines were going through veraison at this time and therefore had no negative impact. The mild weather that followed ensured that ripening was stress free and grapes showed good levels of natural acidity and balanced tannins. Grenache was clearly the stand out variety from this vintage.

The Winemaking
Walking the vineyard rows and tasting grapes, Chester Osborn classifies and determines the ideal picking time for each individual vineyard. Small batches are passed through a gentle open roller crusher with some berries remaining whole and then transferred to five-tonne headeddown open fermenters. These batches remain separate until final blending. Foot treading is undertaken two thirds of the way through fermentation. When tannin extraction is just right the wine is basket pressed and transferred to a mixture of used French and American oak barriques to complete primary and secondary fermentation. The barrel ferments are aged on lees to keep the wine fresh while also reducing the oak influence. There is no racking until final blending and no fining or filtering. Chester and the winemaking team undertake an extensive

The Wine
The nose is vibrant and youthful displaying fruit characters of cherry, raspberry and rhubarb with spices and fresh flowers in the background. As the wine opens more layers emerge with traces of soil characters and more violets. The red fruit characters have intensity on the palate and are very focused with a great balance of ripeness and flavour development. There is an underlying game character and dried savoury herb nuances of sage and oregano build on the mid palate. The flowery, powder like tannins match the elegant nature of the wine wonderfully and provide a very unobtrusive, yet vital structure to the wine.

The natural acidity is a hallmark of Grenache from this sub region and certainly features in this wine. It evolves in the glass and provides more enjoyment with each sip. Where there has been change - and for more about how Jean-Roger Calvet and Jean-Luc Thunevin entered into this collaboration and its evolution consult my report in issue 183 - is in the line-up of wines and their elevage. New wood, like ultra-ripe fruit, is still prominent, but barriques have increasingly given way to demi-muids and foudres, while the talk is of enhancing freshness and minerality, an aim reflected not only in the rigorous exclusion via table de trie of any overripe berries and in the approach to fermentation and elevage, but also in a decision to plant additional Carignan which, like Mourvedre, Calvet sees as having a more important role in the domaine's future. Most of the wines I tasted on this occasion were in the 15-15.5% alcohol range but seldom did I apprehend any significant heat. (Changes in the individual cuvee make-ups are detailed in my tasting notes.) The 2008 vintage was noteworthy for the length of its ripening period, notes Calvet, with his harvest not having concluded until the end of the first week in October. Alkaline and wet stone aromas here approach the effect of sticking one’s head down a moss- and algae-covered cistern, accompanied by scents of lily, narcissus, quince preserves, stale bread, musk, and sweat. The rich quince character is carried and complimented by a juicy and not at all heavy palate impression, and this finishes with remarkable refreshment and pronouncedly alkaline and stony minerality, as well as snuffed candle wick smokiness and bitterness of quinine. Prices for these wines continue to be quite reasonable considering their combination of quality and late release that permits access to mature nobly sweet Chenin. Such access was still nearly universal in the early ‘80s, when Terry Theise first piqued my interest in nobly sweet Loire Chenin, but gradually the art of holding old stocks died, along with the fashion for these wines – indeed, along with many once-renowned domaines.

Touchais.fr

Once in the winery, the grapes immediately go into the press for a gentle pressing.

This is followed by a spontaneous fermentation, brought on by indigenous yeasts and at a controlled temperature, in order to express the terroir, vintage and climate of MOULIN TOUCHAIS. This is the first vintage produced, and it’s a blend of 38% Malbec, 25% Syrah, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Grenache (from their property in Vertientes, where the Syrah also comes from) and 8% Petit Verdot from selected plots from their property in Aconcagua. 2020 was warm and dry and saw an early harvest that delivered concentrated and powerful wines, this one at 14% alcohol and with a pH of 3.53 and 6.09 grams of acidity. It fermented mostly in stainless steel and 10% in concrete eggs, and the blend matured for 22 months in French oak barrels, 65% of them new. The nose is very expressive, and the palate is juicy and textured palate, a little warmer and riper than the Seña, with that Mediterranean twist from the Garnacha and Syrah. It has an intense nose, quite primary, with red berries, herbs and even a citrus touch, but there is no sweetness at all. The fine tannins have grip, and the finish is dry and serious. The élevage was similar to the Seña, but in the future, they might go for a slightly shorter élevage and use some foudres. The wine has a very nice bright color and is still young and lively, very much in the serious and elegant style of the Seña, despite the warm inaugural vintage, showing in the juicy palate. 30,000 bottles produced. It serves as a poster child for our project, and also seems to have become a flag bearer for Cape heritage wine in general.

Vineyards:
As a rule, the Cartology parcels are dry farmed bushvines, with a minimum age of 30 years, although most are between 40 and 50 years old. Average yields for these parcels is around 3 tons/Ha or around 20hl/Ha.
Cartology is 90% Chenin blanc and 10% Semillon. The Chenin comes from our parcels in the Skurfberg, Piekenierskloof, Perdeberg, Bottelary, False Bay and Tygerberg. The Semillon comes from the old La Colline block in Franschhoek.

Tasting Notes:
Weight and power are not the same thing. Here's a wine with a moderate palate weight that has both intensity and power. The nose is wonderful: kumquat citrus, sweet oatmeal and honey, maybe elderflower. The palate is fine and bright, reminiscent of salty/sweet candied lemon, great length.

Technical Details:
Varieties: 90% Chenin Blanc, 10% Semillon

The Name: Cartology means the study of maps or charts. It could not be more perfect name for this wine. For three centuries and across 13 generations, the family has produced wines that are structured, longlived, fruity, elegant and balanced: the celebrated Trimbach style. The family personally looks after each operation, from planting to harvests and from vinification to bottling. The viticultural origin of the Trimbach family dates back to 1626, when Jean Trimbach, was recognized as a citizen of Riquewihr. From then on, the Trimbach's were renowned for their wine-growing. Maison Trimbach's vineyards are all situated around Ribeauville (Ribeauville, Hunawihr, Bergheim, Rorschwihr, Riquewihr and Mittlewihr). They benefit from the unique Alsatian microclimate, thanks to the Vosges Mountains protection, which preserves the plain from the rain. The vineyards were planted on the Ribeauville's fault line that fractured 50 million years ago between the Vosges Mountain range and the Black Forest offering a mosaic of terroirs including the complex calcareous limestone and bio-degraded seashell fossils called Muschelkalk.

WINEMAKING & VINTAGE NOTES
The vines are 50 years old from Ribeauvill's top sites such as Grand Cru Rosacker and the highly regarded Muhlforst. Soils are marl and limestone. Handpicked as late as possible in order to achieve maximum ripeness, which in turn, gives optimum depth of flavor and complexity. The grapes are pressed very gently in a pneumatic press. The juice ferments in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats for 3 to 4 weeks.

The wine is not oak-aged, and is vinified to complete dryness with no residual sugar. Bottling is done early to preserve freshness, and the wine rests in bottle in the cellar for several years before reaching the marketplace, ensuring the wine is both ready to drink upon release but also can be cellared.

TASTING NOTES
Elegant, dry and precise. Paul Avril (1937-2009) started working at the domain 1963 at first together with his father and later for many years with his son. Paul-Vincent Avril (1965 - ) attended as a young man wine school in Bourgondy and when he went back to the domain in 1988 he had visions about finesse and elegance and he still considers these qualities as most importent for a high class wine.

Today the property covers 32 ha. 3 ha. is with white varieties. 24 different parcels are spread around the town. In vintage 2007, 2008 and 2009 the yield has been 25, 17 and 19 hl/ha. The yield is minimized by green harvest and by repeated sorting of the grapes during harvest. Clos des Papes is not a place for experiments. The aim is constantly to make a wine of very high quality that meet the expectations from Paul Vincent Avril himself as well from his costumers around the world. It's a sign of quality to Avril if the wine is recognizable through the vintages. 80% of the production counting about 100.000 bottles is exported. Rain continued through December 2021 and January 2022, adding more disease pressure than most seasons. As summer went on the conditions were very mild with some humidity from the north creating the occasional issue to control. In all this meant that the fruit had to mature on the vine for longer than normal, but luckily the weather stabilised and we were able to bring in a healthy smaller crop of fruit with a natural higher acidity than the previous season. The changeover could not have been more challenging with the 2023 vintage. “The harvest was a struggle because there was a lot of pressure due to the warm and humid air,” reports Stefan Doktor, an athlete—he races through the world's ice channels on a luge—who naturally knows and appreciates challenges. “You had to work as quickly as possible and press until 3 a.m. because the yeasts were already active in the vineyard. Before the big harvest team arrived on September 18, we had already brought in 40% of our grapes—all in a healthy state and physiologically ripe, with high acidity—the week before with the pre-harvest team. A week later, we had 80%.” In total, the harvest took a little less than three weeks. By the end of September, everything had been harvested, including two spectacularly precise botrytis wines, a Beerenauslese and a Trockenbeerenauslese, both of which have crazy acidity levels and precise fruit aromas, as if Albrecht Dürer had drawn them. They are the highlights of the Schloss Johannisberg 2023 vintage and are made to last.

The average yield in 2023 was 56 hectoliters per hectare. In the end, Stefan Doktor himself was impressed by the quality of the musts and even more so by the wines with their superbly pronounced tartaric acidity. The highlight for next year has already been bottled. For the upcoming 250th anniversary of Spätlese, which was discovered here in 1775, 1,000 bottles have been made of the Riesling Schloss Johannisberg Ex-Bibliotheca Subterranea Cuvée 100 Spätlese, which blends numerous Spätlese vintages back to 1915.

Jancis Robinson | JR 16
Published: Apr 28, 2024
Drink: 2025-2035

Grosse Lage.
Delicate and charming. Other TBAs may be sweeter, fruitier and even more concentrated, but none is more harmonious, more complete. Welschriesling is a great grape for the sweet wines of Lake Neusiedl, and it can also deliver world-class wines as a soloist—the 2012 TBA No. 7, for example, is rich in flawless perfection—but together with barrel-fermented Chardonnay, it adds a nobility and finesse that is breathtaking even in its youth. Kracher's TBAs are united not only by their rich and precise fruit but also the noble texture and their complexity, which has recently been significantly increased once again: the 2019s were on their lees for 29 long months, longer than ever before. In the finish, especially after several years of bottle aging, Kracher’s TBAs reveal not only spicy and herbal notes but also that persistent saline taste that makes the specific terroir of the Neusiedlersee region tangible in taste.

Lake Neusiedl is a steppe lake that long ago was about 10 times larger than it is today. Thus, the vineyards today are located on soils that were once covered by the lake and "that still have high mineral and salt contents after it dried up," as Gerhard Kracher points out. They give the wines a typical mineral note and freshness. "The specific climate of this nature reserve has provided perfect conditions for the development of Botrytis cinerea for more than 60 years," Kracher explains, reflecting the family history of the Weinlaubenhof that became world-famous in the 1990s with Gerhard's father, Alois, who became the ambassador not only for Austrian noble sweet wines but Austrian wines in general. At that time, most of the wines were sweet, but since global warming causes weeks of drought even in autumn and thus less botrytis than in the 1990s, Gerhard Kracher has returned to producing a significant number of dry table wines again as is grandfather did. He also produces a remarkably good pink sparkling wine, and together with his friend Aldo Sohm, star sommelier in New York's Le Bernardin and Sohm's Wine Bar, he handcrafts an impressive little series of dry Grüner Veltliners in both Burgenland and Weinviertel under the Sohm & Kracher brand.

However, it is forbidden to compare the TBAs from Lake Neusiedl with those from Mosel, Rhine and Nahe, which grow on completely different soils and and under completely different climatic conditions and which are of unique savoriness and refinement, which they preserve for decades and even longer than a century. For many consumers, especially in Asia, these wines are not necessarily too expensive (and God, they are expensive!) but too acidic. They appreciate the rich TBAs from the Seewinkel more, because here the pH levels are higher and the acids are milder. Also, the small, new barriques used for the Nouvelle Vague style chez Kracher give these wines a balanced texture and elegance from the start—something that usually takes a Mosel Riesling two to three decades to achieve.

For 20 years, it has been my desire to try matured Kracher TBAs. This year, Gerhard and I had a few extra hours, and so he opened a whole series of aged TBAs from different vintages, including 2012, 2007 (the first vintage that Gerhard bottled after the early death of his father) and the legendary 2002 but also 2005, 2001 and 1996. All of these rarities prove that Kracher's TBAs are long-distance runners even though they already taste attractive in their youth. Against the backdrop of the matured wines, which before 2007 had been produced and bottled by Gerhard’s father, Alois, the progress Gerhard has made also becomes even clearer. Probably even with the 2019s he has succeeded in his finest collection of TBAs so far. While seven TBAs is not a particularly large yield, the fact that he was able to leave them on their lees longer than usual (29 months instead of 22-24 months), in part due to markets being restrained by the pandemic, means that they seem to have become even fresher, more precise and saltier. Their transparency and finesse, at any rate, is astonishing even in their youth, and so Kracher's 2019s logically achieve the highest ratings his young TBAs have received in The Wine Advocate to date (and the same can be said for the lower predicates). His 2019s have already reached this extraordinary level of precision, finesse and transparency for which many a predecessor had needed a good decade or two after a rather turgid beginning. Kracher's 2019 TBAs and the exceptional form of the 2012s and 2002s, in particular, are further proof that we are dealing with one of the most important and best sweet wine producers in the world.

Whereby I consider the term “sweet wine” for this kind of immeasurably rich and elegant wines almost a banalization. Kracher's TBAs are not great because they are sweet, but because for all their richness and concentration they remain elegant, fine and sensual, and from an age of 10 or better 20 years they also become remarkably complex and stimulating. One could do an entire menu with these beautifully balanced and pristine textured wines––only to do so, one would first have to own them and leave them alone for a decade or two.

Kracher.at

Medium yellow-green. Barren sites also suffered from the drought, as there was no water available. The supply of nutrients was also problematic due to the drought, but then there was rain in September. The plants breathed a sigh of relief, but the berries also soaked up the water and therefore hardly increased in must weight. Sorting was therefore also a top priority in the fall of 2022. Even more than rot (there was hardly any noble botrytis, but there was gray rot), dried-out, unripe berries made life difficult for the harvesters. These were not allowed in the bucket under any circumstances, even if they looked healthy, and should actually be cut to the ground before the main harvest. Rotten and noble rotten berries are taboo at Schloss Johannisberg for all wines below the Spätlese and Auslese predicates. Full-bodied, rich and intense yet elegant and refined on the palate, this is a concentrated, persistently saline and powerful Riesling with a long, impressive and powerful finish. The FE has more salt and tension than the 2018 Geisberg and is definitely the more complex wine. Tasted at the domaine in April 2024 and again on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Clos Ste Hune at the beginning of November when the wine was beautifully fragrant, refined and elegant, even pure and precise on the remarkably coolish nose, given that dry and very warm vintage. This is an enormously complex Riesling with a dense and fleshy texture of fully ripe fruits and a firm tannin structure. Promising! 14.5% stated alcohol.
